Prof’s grammar is awkward

By From page A12 | September 15, 2013

In your Sunday paper of Sept. 8, you printed a column titled “Four Tasks for College Professors,” authored by a college professor. Task No. 1 starts with the following sentence: “Your job is to teach whomever is in your class.” It seems to me that few professors need that advice, which is memorable only by the extreme awkwardness of the expression. “Whoever” might satisfy the pedant grammarian, but some awkwardness would remain.
