Remember when the sound of train whistles was a beautiful sound? The steam train whistles were tuned to a lovely minor chord. I remember camping in the Northern Transvaal in 1969 and hearing a train leave a nearby station, and I could hear it going through the mountains for a long time. It was like music.
These days, the train horns are loud, discordant and raucous. They make a tremendous racket in Davis, too frequently, both day and night.
Several questions:
How necessary are they ? They have that (unwanted) fence along the railway line, and all the crossings are guarded. So what is the point?
Is it necessary to blow the horn so many times? When they start blowing the horn, it seems to go on and on. What is the point?
Can anything be done about it? Any point in trying?
Am I the only one bothered by this? I live relatively far from where most of the horn blowing occurs (Drexel Drive). It must be particularly annoying for those living closer.
Has all this noise prevented even one incident? I doubt it.
All the incidents that have occurred so far have been either alcohol-related, or suicide, or deliberate malfeasance. The horn had no effect on these.
Do I have a point? Or am I turning into an old curmudgeon?
