Despite several burning aromatherapy candles and quiet holiday music playing in the background, reading the “Grim budget news on the horizon for the Davis schools” in the Nov. 30 Enterprise raised my blood pressure to the point where I thought it wise to remind the kids that if mommy collapses on the floor, they should please dial 911.
The list of possible cuts to the Davis schools is staggering in its scope: music and science teachers, librarians and reading specialists, the “healthy lunch” program, classroom supplies, not to mention overall teacher reductions resulting in things like 30-plus kindergartners crammed in classroom designed for 20.
But what really gets me is not three weeks ago I read an excerpt of a report that of the 280 most profitable American companies, 78 of them paid no federal income tax. Now I understand the notion that providing companies tax incentives is meant to spur growth and create jobs, something we sorely need, but several companies given these lucrative tax incentives did not create jobs — in fact, they cut them.
Rome is burning. But I have a tent and I hear Central Park here in Davis is lovely this time of year.
