If you haven’t voted, please consider Sheila Allen as a uniquely qualified City Council candidate. During her nine years of service on the Davis school board, she managed a budget of $78 million. She and her fellow board members skillfully worked their way through the austerity of the recession that necessitated making sizable and frequent cuts.
Other than Rochelle Swanson, none of the other candidates has managed a budget of this magnitude and with its complex set of challenges. Sheila will bring competent fiscal oversight to our city, which is badly needed because of the current shortfall.
I have known Sheila for more than 20 years. When I first met her, she was serving as president of the Yolo County Health Council. I know her as a person of integrity and who is fair-minded and deeply respectful of the rules and regulations governing the organizations with which she has been affiliated, including the Davis school board.
I value her ability to make a tough call, as evidenced by her vote and the vote of two other board members regarding the Crawford/Peterson issue. While Crawford was not allowed to complete this academic year as the boys volleyball coach, she will return to her coaching position at Davis High School in the fall.
Over the years, I have seen her leading in many different civic arenas with a collaborative style and genuine concern for the well-being of individuals and organizations. She is accessible, does her homework and has an amazingly rich track record of service to citizens of Davis and of Yolo County. Our community would be very fortunate to have her serve as a member of our City Council.
