This month, Congress will decide whether to “fast track” the Trans Pacific Partnership proposal or not. “Fast track” means Congress would give up its oversight and decision-making capacity and have the president act in its stead.
The Trans Pacific Partnership has huge implications for all of us. It impacts environmental and labor law, procurement — read “buy American” — pharmaceutical copyrights, and many more important items.
It would transfer our sovereign power to transnational corporations through an international court juried by three judges from corporations who would decide whether countries would need to pay fines or not for interfering with corporations’ “expected” profits; NAFTA has a similar court system and has overwhelmingly sided with corporations in court cases.
Please write or call your senators and House members to tell them not to pass this proposal without oversight; they should reject “fast track.”
