We at PG&E regret that Bob Dunning was frustrated by the details of our voluntary SmartRate program (“PG&E Plan Tinkers with the Calendar,” May 30). Customers shouldn’t be scared off by his experience, however. More than 100,000 of our electric customers are now enrolled, and less than 1 percent have asked to leave the program.
Here are some reasons why: The average participant saved $67 last year through the program. They enjoyed peace of mind through our bill protection plan, which ensures that in the first year of participation they cannot lose money. Finally, the program gives them plenty of notice of when they need to save or shift energy usage — on at most 15 days during the season — so there are no surprises.
