The TPP, the hush-hush Trans Pacific Partnership, has now been introduced to Congress. The TPP is the secret trade agreement being drafted by 12 nations. It will touch every area of our lives from the political to the environmental.
You haven’t heard about this? That’s because for five years, the countries have been in negotiations behind closed doors. Though 600 corporate trade advisers enjoyed access, the public and the Congress were excluded from the talks.
President Obama is pushing Congress to renew “fast track” or trade promotion authority so that he could sign the TPP and have Congress vote it up or down. If fast track is passed, debate time would be limited and amendments prohibited.
A full public hearing and debate on TPP and all trade agreements is essential. The TPP gives corporations the power. Fast track is contrary to democratic principles.
Thanks to Wikileaks, concerned citizens and congressional representatives got an early look at some TPP documents and were able to mount a strong defense against fast track and TPP.
Trade agreements no longer look at just tariffs or quotas but affect everything from food safety to environmental protection to medicine patents. Trade agreements take precedence over U.S. laws at federal, state and municipal levels.
