If you are concerned with the rush to frack California please write in favor of SB 1132, which will place a moratorium on fracking. Feel free to use the following letter as a template. This bill is set for hearing on April 8 by the Committee on Natural Resources and Water.

Dear Senators,
There is strong opposition to fracking California. I was one of the 4,000 — estimated by the Examiner — who came to the Capitol March 15 to demonstrate against fracking. We came from throughout California, some traveling through the night. We not only came as individuals but also as community groups working for local bans against fracking. As wells continue to proliferate in our state, more municipalities will be threatened and this ground swell will only grow. None of us want it in our backyards; together, we don’t want it in our state. Successful or not, Sacramento would do well to recognize the multiple local efforts to keep fracking away.

Here are just five of the many reasons to support SB 1132:
1.Fracking threatens California where we are the most vulnerable: water resources and earthquake faults.
2. Historically, the oil industry has defied effective regulation. Case in point: fracking is ongoing in California even before regulations are in place.
3. Natural gas/oil, as other fossil fuels can only add to our heat trapping gases. These gases don’t do subtraction.
4. Even though natural gas/oil burn cleaner than coal, when the energy cost of fracking and the methane leaks are considered, natural gas/oil is not green energy.
5. For locals, fracking produces transient boom towns but leaves behind permanently wasted land. In sum, fracking is not as advertised and its regulation is yet to be achieved. California needs a moratorium on fracking. Please vote for SB 1132.
