Sports discussion is long overdue

By From page A8 | March 05, 2014

Sunday’s op-ed piece by Nancy Peterson, “We Must Protect All of Our Children,” was informative and distressing. I appreciated Peterson outlining the restrictions incumbent on her as a public official, i.e., school board member, when it involves personnel issues. These have been stated before but were worth repeating as there seem to be continued misunderstandings by many, including local columnists, about the role of privacy and protection in personnel issues.

The op-ed piece was distressing for the personal harm that has occurred both physically on property and on blogs against her and her family.

That the issue of sports, coaches, hiring and dismissal policies could evoke such violence in language and property damage speaks to an issue that is long overdue to be examined by the community, including the school board, but not limited to the school board. Purpose of sports at the high school? Role of coaches as models for young people?

I had experience with four separate varsity teams at the high school and would support community discussions about the disturbing mix of social, emotional and physical issues that saturate Davis High sports.
