Thank you for your recent promotion of the communitywide track meet held last Saturday, June 18, by the Davis High School Freedom from Hunger Club. This club has been in existence since 2006, when students at Davis High came together to raise awareness of and to volunteer for Freedom from Hunger Day, celebrating Freedom from Hunger’s 60th anniversary.
Every year since, students from grades 10 through 12 raise money to defeat world hunger and have collectively raised more than $12,000 since 2006. As Freedom from Hunger celebrates its 65th anniversary, we wish to highlight the contributions these young women and men have made toward Freedom from Hunger’s value-added microfinance programs in 19 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Each year, I am impressed with the leadership, energy, commitment and compassion consistently displayed by these dedicated students. This year, the club’s biggest fundraising event was the communitywide track meet at the new Ron & Mary Brown Stadium at Davis High School.
Their important efforts included building a website, publicizing the event, recruiting volunteers, securing food vendors, organizing each competition and myriad other things, each a learning opportunity for the students and each necessary for the success of this first communitywide track meet. And it was, indeed, a success!
I’d like to thank Spencer Elliot, Davis High track coach and faculty adviser to the club, and would particularly like to acknowledge Sahana Kumar, Lauren Holtz and Kelly Goss for their dedication, vision and enthusiasm this year. Together with their club members, they worked tirelessly to organize this big event despite their usual coursework, sports, activities, college applications, exams and, for some, graduation and farewells.
I look forward to Kelly’s return next year as the club president and to her interest in organizing the second annual communitywide track meet. Watch for it next year. You won’t want to miss it.
Come and support the students of Davis High School in their quest to make this a better world for all!
