In Thursday’s Enterprise, Rep. John Garamendi came out in opposition to the United States taking military action in Syria. He lists several of my concerns, including a widening regional conflict should we bomb Syria; the loss of civilian lives; the likelihood that this loss will make anger with the U.S. on Arab streets even worse; and skepticism about the quality of our intelligence in light of former CIA assurances that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
He also indicated that the proposed attack has no support in international law. (I have been unable to find such support for an attack on a country with which we are not at war.) He supports instead the United States “working to gain international support that isolates (Bashar) Assad and pushes him to negotiate.”
I am sure that Garamendi could use our support in this matter. You can email him (https://garamendi.house.gov./contact-me) or drop by his office in downtown Davis (412 G St.) and talk with his representatives. Let him know that you favor a “no” vote on taking military action in Syria.
This contact will help Garamendi continue to oppose a bombing that does not serve our interests.
