I write to encourage Davis voters to participate in the vote-by-mail special election called by our Davis Board of Education. In order to participate, voters must return their ballots to the Yolo County Elections Department by mail, or drop off their completed ballots at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis, no later than March 6.
In addition, I urge voters to vote “yes”on Measure C in the special election and support the renewal of two school parcel taxes first approved by our community in 1984 (Measure K) and 2008 (Measure W). This parcel tax renewal will ensure that $6.5 million in revenue (about $790 for each of the 8,200 students who attend Davis public schools) continues to be available to serve our K-12 students.
Since 2009, our state has reduced its funding support to our schools by just over $1,000 per student on an annual basis. By approving Measure C, our community will prevent a local educational disaster. Failure to pass Measure C will result in the loss of more than 65 teachers from our classrooms and 20 educational support staff (counselors, librarians, school secretaries).
Now, as a consequence of reduced state fiscal support for public education, our local educators need these parcel tax dollars more than ever to provide the basics of a quality education for our children.
Please join me and vote “yes” on Measure C.
