Thanks for going hog-wild!

So many Davis people and organizations made March 1 our biggest and best Pig Day ever!

It wouldn’t be Pig Day without a half-dozen baby pigs to steal the show. Thanks to Woodland farmer Jim Neilson for bringing baby pigs to Pig Day for the past 20 years.

A heartfelt thanks to Eva Dopico, Chris Jones, Cody Holland and Claudia Carpenter, whose costumed performance as the Three Pigs and Big Bad Wolf made Pig Day memorable and photogenic.

Thanks to Grace Valley Christian Center volunteers for doing whatever it takes to set the stage for Pig Day, and for making it look perfect. Kudos also to UC Davis Rotaract Club for decorating the Farmers Market Pavilion.

Bravo to Sutter Davis Hospital for bringing its live cooking station to Pig Day to prepare and sample fried pork coucous, made from Bledsoe Meats and market vegetables. And thanks to John Bledsoe for donating the pork tenderloin.

Props to the Yolo Food Bank for bringing its “thank you” breakfast to Pig Day, where it served breakfast to 745 people and raised $2,490. And congrats to this year’s favorite Food Bank piggie bank: “Chalkboard Charlie!”

High-fives to Davis Community Church Nursery School, Davis Parent Nursery School and University Covenant Nursery School for making hundreds of kids happy with their piggie craft booths. Thumbs up to Heidi Bekebrede for bringing her “make-your-own-piggie-bank” craft to Pig Day again this year.

Thumbs up to Ink Monkey Graphics for all the Pig Day aprons they gave our market sellers to wear.

Thanks to our food vendors — Ciocolat, Fat Face, Davis Creamery, Monticello Seasonal Cuisine, Montoya’s Tamales and Upper Crust Bakery — for going whole hog and making pig- and pork-themed treats.

A round of applause to Peter Franklin Band and Regal Beezers for providing toe-tapping Americana music.

My deepest gratitude to all the local farmers, ranchers, cheese-makers, processed food sellers, food vendors, crafters and musicians who make the Davis Farmers Market the place to be in Davis every Saturday. And to everyone at The Davis Enterprise: Thanks for bringing thousands of happy people and families to Pig Day so they could all go hog-wild with us!

Randii MacNear

Executive director, Davis Farmers Market
