I don't know if "The Buzz" was excessively loud or not. However, Davis has a noise ordinance for a reason: No one has the right to impose loud noises on someone else's ears. It's much the same principle which says your right to throw a punch ends with the start of my nose. The comments of "Davis student" suggest he doesn't understand that we all need to respect the rights of everyone else, including the right to enjoy peace and quiet in our own homes. ... FWIW, here is the beginning of the Davis noise ordinance, from our Municipal Code: "It is declared to be the policy of the city, in the exercise of its police power, to prohibit unnecessary, excessive and annoying sound levels from all sources. In accordance with this policy, Davis is designated a quiet city. At certain levels, sounds are detrimental to the health and welfare of the citizenry and, in the public interest, shall be systematically proscribed." ... What may be a problem in this case is that the noise from "The Buzz" came from campus, outside the City limits.

Tsk!Tsk! to the student who responded with such entitlement to E.Saft's letter. What he calls prudish, might be interpreted to mean, her family is in its own space, seeking to relax and enjoy the comfort of their own home. Student, whoever he/she may be, fails to realize that he is welcome to keep his noise in his own space, but invading another's in a big NO NO.
Davis is progressive, intelligent, and deeply respectful of others, quirky, well, that's a new one. How the 'Event' acquired a permit for such a lenghty, noisy gathering can & should be taken up with the proper authorities. And student is apparently in school...just where he/she needs to be as apparently he/she has a lot to learn.

Luckily the majority of Davis citizens aren't as prudish as you are. If you have a problem with noise you can either A.) Don't live or raise your kids in a college town or B.) Don't live less than a mile away from the campus and don't expect noise late at night. Simple as that. This university is what makes Davis more than a depressed cow town like Yuba City/Marysville. I applaud the vibrance and quirkiness of Davis, for it is the essence of the character of this town.
