I have lived in Davis since I was 4 years old, with the only exception being for my undergraduate education elsewhere. Having been to a sizable number of other places both abroad and domestic has only showed me how special a town I was raised in. At times, it can be frustrating to see how politics play out here, but I think an array of opinions is a large part of what makes Davis so great.
As of late, however, I have become more worried than annoyed. We are at a pivotal moment in our beloved city. The people we elect next month will not only be making cuts to an already-trimmed budget, but also deciding upon one of the most important city manager appointments in our history.
I know what I look for in an elected representative in government. Above all, the people chosen for this duty must be the best of the best at making logical and informed decisions for the better of our city. Likeability and other traits inevitably will factor in, but the core criterion for us voters next month is critical thinking.
For this reason, I will be voting for Daniel Parrella and Robb Davis. I admit I am an old friend of Daniel’s, but my passion for this city and thinking about this election are the same either way.
Daniel and I were debate partners back in high school, so I know first-hand what he is made of in intense deliberation. I also know for a fact that he can remain calm under pressure, evaluate evidence and decide the best strategy to argue for passionately. We need that type of person on the council. My experience with Robb Davis has led me to believe that he, too, is capable of informed discussion and compromise.
