I stupidly left my wallet atop a fuel dispenser at a gas station in Walnut Creek on Sunday afternoon. Discovering my error and returning to the station 10 minutes later, it was gone. I received a call the next morning that Clint and Stephanie DeKnikker of Davis had found the wallet and, rather than turn it in at the station to a questionable attendant behind the glass, they took it home.
They called my Oakland office on Sunday night and left a message, as well as the Moraga police to notify me, researched the number of a neighbor across the street who had our home phone and even notified my bank that the wallet had been found.
On Monday morning they sent it to my office overnight, and refused to accept any reward (I told them to keep the cash, just return the wallet, driver’s license, etc.). When the wallet arrived Tuesday morning, there were their names, but no return address. I had to call and beg them to give me an address where I could send an appropriate “thank you” gift, which I did.
What is amazing is the extent of time and trouble these selfless Davis folks went to in saving me hours and hundreds of dollars in time and aggravation, all the while acting as if everyone would have done the same.
Davis, you have a couple of true saints in your midst, and I am fortunate to have crossed their paths.
