There is a lot to think about this election. Dan Wolk and Joe Krovoza are running for the Assembly seat being vacated by Mariko Yamada (who served our district extremely well and deserves our thanks for a job well done.) I like and admire both of them and I wish they were not running against each other.
I support Dan because I am impressed by the breadth of his vision and his focus on income inequality and state support for education. And I think he is the most viable candidate against Bill Dodd, a Republican-turned-Democrat opportunist who is campaigning on the back and bank accounts of wealthy donors. (If you like what the Supreme Court is doing to our democracy by striking down campaign financing regulations, Bill Dodd is your candidate.)
But while Dan and Joe are running against each other for an Assembly seat, they both agree that Davis should vote “no” on Measure P. The Davis Enterprise, the Sacramento Bee, virtually all of the public officials in our community and a lot of people who have thought seriously about the issue agree that Davis voters should reject Measure P. Let me put it bluntly: Voting for Measure P is like “destroying the village in order to save it.” I have lived in Davis for 33 years. Voting yes on P would be the dumbest decision this community will have made in more than three decades.
I support the two female candidates running for City Council: Sheila Allen and Rochelle Swanson. Both have demonstrated a commitment to hard work, integrity and a willingness to hear all sides of disputes and the voices of all the constituencies in our community.
I have not always agreed with all of their decisions. But in politics as in most things, the perfect is the enemy of the good. And these two candidates are very good.
Please vote in this election. Elections matter. And this one matters a lot for our community.
