This is Smyte’s true calling

Buried in the recent stories about the departure of Davis High School coach Steve Smyte was a startling statistic: Under his leadership, football players collectively raised their grade-point average from 2.2 to 3.2.

While I’m spectacularly unqualified to evaluate Smyte as an athletic coach, as an educator, I know this GPA jump is very impressive.

If the school district no longer wants Smyte’s services as a coach, perhaps it should consider hiring him for an even more important position: inspiring and motivating young men from all backgrounds to achieve academic success.
