I write to applaud Linda Baumann’s articulate endorsement of Democratic Congressman John Garamendi, who is running against Republican Kim Vann for re-election in the newly defined 3rd Congressional District. I, too, have been flooded with scurrilous mail attacks on Garamendi’s commitment to Medicare. Because these broadsides are not directly sent by the Vann campaign, they can avoid mentioning that Vann’s entire platform rests on limiting the role of government, including its role in health care delivery.
Vann has advocated “stepping down” Medicare and Social Security benefits, and her chief advocate in Washington is National Republican Congressional Committee chair Pete Sessions, who introduced legislation that would privatize Social Security.
It is Vann, not Garamendi, who poses a threat to the survival of Medicare. As Baumann’s letter makes clear, Garamendi’s outstanding record as a legislator has demonstrated his commitment to keeping Medicare and Social Security available to all.
