Measure E is a high tax and it is based on where I live (in a house or apartment), not on my income. Delaine Eastin said, “Think of it as homeowner’s insurance.” Really? Do you really mean I should keep paying these high taxes over and over? How does it benefit the homeowner?
Measure E really doesn’t have anything to do with how kids learn in school. How kids learn and their success depends on their attitude, how much their parents care and support them. It is the parents who create the environment that support kids to learn, particularly highly educated parents in Davis. That is what makes a difference in Davis, not these parcel taxes.
Now let’s reflect on what Measure E is asking. Is Measure E asking for $204 and $242 or $446? Remember, Measure C ($320 annually) was just passed. Isn’t the total now $766? What’s going on here? Why do we have to pay all these parcel taxes if we live in a home and not if we live in an apartment? Why do we as Davis residents have to pay for the education of 500 kids of parents who do not live in Davis and do not pay these taxes?
In reading the sample ballot, proponents of Measure E never tell us exactly how this tax is to be distributed. Does it go to senior administrators first for their retirement? Does it go to the classroom teachers who really need it for reduced class sizes and supplies? Even with Measures A, Q and W in force, the class sizes have not gone down and now they are asking for more money!
I will vote no on Measure E and I will vote to elect Jose Granda to the school board, the only candidate who will be responsible to the taxpayers and the most qualified candidate. Please join me in doing the same.
