War is not the answer

By From page A10 | September 06, 2013

I commend Congressman John Garamendi’s strong stand for congressional hearings before approving a military response in Syria. I hope Sens. Barbara Box and Dianne Feinstein and the rest of the California congressional delegation will support this oversight.

I urge them also to speak out for an international judicial approach, rather than a mini-war, to the possible use of chemical weapons. This approach should include:

* An investigation by an independent international body to compile evidence about the crime and to identify the perpetrators, followed by

* An international effort to arrest and detain those who commanded and those who carried out the attack, and

* A public trial in the World Court.

Our country should serve as a model of respect for the law, not of vigilante action outside the law. War is not the answer to war crimes, in Syria or elsewhere.
