Water is worth the investment

I feel fortunate to have lived for many years in a community with an active, well-informed and thoughtful citizenry and leadership. Issues of importance with social, economic and environmental consequence regionally, nationally and internationally are studied, considered and vigorously debated. Clean water is such an issue.

I also am grateful that our residents and community leaders have wrestled for many years with a solution to Davis’ water sources and discharge. After years of discussion, and recent in-depth analysis and advice from experts through the lengthy process of the Water Advisory Committee, our City Council has unanimously supported a solution in Measure I, being submitted to the voters. The measure also has the widespread support of elected officials at every other level.

Not only does Measure I, by including surface water, assure a long-term, reliable and healthy source, it also decreases adverse effects on our precious wetlands and wildlife.

While there will be substantial cost increases to provide this reliable and clean water supply over the next five years, our water quality, availability and our regional environment are very worth the investment. I urge readers to join me in supporting Measure I.
