We should let kids be kids

By From page A6 | March 13, 2014

The recent news about the fired volleyball coach makes me feel there is something very wrong about school sports in general.

$22,000 has been spent on a secret report on the incident, that coulda/shoulda/woulda been spent far more wisely toward some academic purpose.

There was a time when the kids played sports because it was a fun and healthy activity. Then there was friendly competition between teams from different schools and colleges.

This escalated into a very serious business that subjects the kids to enormous amounts of stress, and excessive importance is placed on winning and losing. People act like winning a football or volleyball game is like life or death! It is no longer fun and has become big business at colleges, and while it makes careers in sports, it also ruins lives.

Why can’t we let kids be kids and just have fun?

Am I just really naive, or am I right?
