It has been 41 years since I graduated from Davis High School. I happened to be in Davis a couple of weeks ago and decided to climb on a bicycle and toodle around town. I eventually ended up at the high school.
It was a Sunday and nobody was on campus. I marveled at the beautiful baseball diamond, the many new buildings that have sprung up and the renovated football field.
However, when I walked into the old quad area and approached the Blue Devil monument that was donated by the Class of 1959 at the base of the old gym, I couldn’t believe it! Someone has punched in a couple of holes and completely vandalized it. I am told it has been like this for years!
Where is the school spirit? Where’s the old Blue Devil Pride? It is flat-out embarrassing that no effort has been made to renovate or replace this historical monument.
Having lettered in football, basketball and baseball, I take umbrage that nobody at the administrative level has initiated steps to correct this. If money is the problem, I know my Class of ’70 is willing to solicit donations and bring the old Blue Devil back to his former glory.
Though time marches on, let us never forget to honor and respect our past.
