Sick. These people are so righteous protecting unborn fetuses so they can be born into a crappy life with crappier parents, but heaven forbid anyone try to modernize the second amendment to protect the public AT LARGE. I hate to say it should happen to anyone's child, but is that what it would take? Have they no empathy for anyone else's child or loved one? I fully support Laura's Law and believe change should start there, but there is plenty of wiggle room in the 2nd Amendment to allow personal weapons (although I wish we could just do away with them all together) and at the same time, limit the assault rifles/ammo/etc that is so hugely unnecessary.

There's crazy people all over the world, but these shootings only happen where guns are freely available.

As the late, great Molly Ivins wrote, "I'm not anti-gun, I'm pro-knife..." There aren't too many mass knife attacks. (Sure, there have been a few, but I'd rather take my chances against a knife than a bullet.)

Hi Greg,
People that are against research on gun violence will take any data that is collected and say that it presents guns in a negative way and this can be used to “promote gun control”. Congress cannot tell the CDC what to research but it does control their budget. This is what happened in 1996: The CDC supported $2.6 million for research in “firearm research”. The NRA didn't like the results of that research and put pressure on Congress to end this type of funding. The following year the CDC budget was cut exactly by $2.6 million. This sent a clear message to the CDC (and the NIH) that any funds used for researching gun violence will result in a budget cut the following year. The American Psychological Association published a good article on this at http://www.apa.org/science/about/psa/2013/02/gun-violence.aspx

Thanks,
Ralph Robinson

“none of the funds made available in this title may be used, in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control.”..............Ralph, I'm confused. You speak of studies about "understanding gun violence" being blocked. But this statement speaks of money for "gun control".

Seems to me the issue of mass killings should be more about lack of access to mental health services and the failure to implement Laura's Law. I'm all for reasonable gun control laws, but I think deflecting the issue of a lack of mental health services and the failure to implement Laura's Law is the real issue in regard to the latest spate of killings.
