As the holidays come to an end and we approach 2012, many of us are considering New Year’s resolutions. Some of us will commit to exercising more and losing weight while others will focus on building relationships and stopping bad habits. No matter what our specific commitments are, we are all likely to pursue health-related goals.
The road to good health and well-being is not always an easy one but one that needs following regardless. Work obligations, family commitments and lack of time and energy can all contribute to the derailment of our goals. Easy access to unhealthy food can also steer us in the wrong direction.
There are 30,000 people in Yolo County who do not know where their next meal is coming from. For those struggling with food insecurity, the New Year’s resolution to provide healthy, nutritious options for their families can be a challenging one. As the link between food and hungry people, the Food Bank of Yolo County (FBYC) is committed to addressing the need for food assistance and helping people eat well-balanced meals this year.
Nutritionists, doctors and experts agree that eating a healthy diet can prevent illness and improve overall health. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, there are a few basic things that we can each do to ensure our well-being.
* Eat Well: Balance your diet with whole grains, fresh produce, lean meats, and low-fat dairy. Eat lots of different colors and watch the amount you are eating during any one sitting.
* Exercise: Work physical activity into your daily routine. If possible, try to incorporate some resistance training as well. Every little bit helps.
* Get Health Exams/Screening: Know your body and the areas where you need improvement. A doctor can talk with you directly about addressing any specific health concerns.
* Relax: Ease stress by doing something beneficial such as meditation or yoga.
FBYC distributes about three million pounds of food annually. One-third of that is fruits and vegetables. With the need for food assistance growing, especially among youth and senior citizens, it is imperative to get wholesome, nutritious food to the community.
Friday’s Table is a food distribution done directly from the Food Bank. Each Friday morning, from 7:00-8:00 a.m., FBYC provides fresh fruits and vegetables to clients. The Moveable Market is a program that visits 17 sites throughout the county to deliver produce to people in need, especially those in rural areas that may not have access otherwise. These programs help people to supplement their diets with much-needed vitamins and minerals to improve health. Much of the produce distributed is locally-sourced and seasonal.
It is time to bid a fond farewell to holidays, sweets and excuses. Let’s focus on good health as we construct our New Year’s resolutions. Likewise, let’s make informed decisions about what we eat and remain committed to nutrition, exercise and relaxation. Ultimately, we will be happier and healthier for having done so in 2012.
