Emmett Harden, right, a docent at the Allensworth State Historical Park talks to Daniel Kimmel-Terra and his mom Jennifer Terra about Buffalo Soldiers. Harden, who is dressed as a member of the Union’s 24th Infantry, was one of several volunteers at Saturday’s Juneteenth celebration at the Veterans’ Memorial Center. This year’s celebration highlighted the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth, which is short for June 19th, is a remembrance of that particular date in 1865. On that day, 2,000 Union soldiers arrived at Galveston, Texas, intent on enforcing the abolition of slavery.
