Each March, AFS-USA celebrates Host Family Appreciation Month. The international high school student exchange organization extends thanks to Katie True of Davis, who opened her home to Alongkorn, aka Frank, from Thailand last September.
True and Frank have experienced much since he arrived earlier this school year, including trips to Yosemite and Disneyland. They also have shared cultural traditions like American Thanksgiving and Loy Kratong, an evening when Thais pay respect to the goddess of waters.
In 2009, True hosted an AFS student from Chile named Rocio.
Davis has been involved with AFS for more than 30 years. More than 2,300 AFS exchange students arrive in the United States each year from more than 90 countries, live with local host families and study at area high schools.
