Davis Farm to School, a nationally recognized program dedicated to bringing fresh and healthy food to school lunches and promoting recycling and composting in the schools, recently hosted a lunch of its own to pay tribute to Davis Joint Unified School District custodial, maintenance and operations staff.
Superintendent Winfred Roberson keynoted the luncheon by highlighting the role the custodial staff plays in the success of the district’s sustainability efforts.
“We are a team, and, like any team, there are players on the field and people who work hard to support them,” Roberson said. “Our custodial and other support staff have been nothing less than terrific in making sure our recycling and food waste programs are successful.
“And, more than that, the people we are honoring today have shown they are willing to go above and beyond to encourage and assist students in recycling and composting. You are role models and we want you to know your efforts are appreciated.”
Those honored were Doug Kuntz and Antonia Lara from Holmes Junior High, Feliks Krupa from Patwin Elementary, Eva Gutierez from Korematsu Elementary and Jim High from North Davis Elementary. Each received a certificate and a check for $75.
Davis Farm to School is a project of the Davis Farmers Market Foundation and was founded in 2000 with goals that include purchasing 60 percent of total district produce from local growers, encouraging students to increase (and enjoy) their consumption of fresh produce, and providing opportunities for professional development for food service staff.
In addition, Davis Farm to School maintains and continuously improves an award-winning waste reduction program that has resulted in significant financial savings for the district.
