In California, where more than 90 percent of the natural wetlands habitat has been lost, many birds use agricultural fields for foraging and roosting. In fact, flooded rice fields in the Sacramento Valley provide habitat to 40 percent of wintering shorebirds in the Central Valley.
Point Reyes Bird Observatory Conservation Science and Audubon California have been working to enhance California’s rice landscape for shorebirds. In cooperation with the California Rice Commission, the groups are developing and testing rice field management practices that have the potential to benefit migratory shorebirds.
Khara Strum, a water bird ecologist for Point Reyes Bird Observatory Conservation Science, and Monica Iglecia, a shorebird conservation biologist for Audubon California, will describe their efforts at a Yolo Audubon Society meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. All are welcome to come early for cookies and conversation.
