The Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District has launched its annual lawn mower exchange program, which allows residents of Yolo and Solano counties to receive a $100 discount on a new rechargeable mower when they recycle a gas-powered mower.
Registration is open at www.worxtools.com/US/Yolo-Solano-LMX.aspx or by calling (866) 765-5403. Participants can choose from one of five WORX models, with prices starting at $119 after accounting for the air district’s discount.
Gas-powered yard equipment is a significant contributor to air pollution, a news release said. The Yolo-Solano district’s program provides a financial incentive to local residents who are concerned about air quality and want to switch to a cleaner lawn solution without compromising convenience or mowing power.
“This is a great opportunity for local residents to eliminate one serious emission source from their footprint,” said Mat Ehrhardt, the district’s executive director, in the news release. “Our program drops the cost barrier and allows Yolo and Solano residents to make the jump to the cleaner option.”
After registering and ordering their new mower, participants will deliver their old gas-powered mower to one of the district’s eight area partner sites: Yolo County Central Landfill in Woodland; Davis Waste Removal; Recology Dixon; Recology Hay Road in Vacaville; Recology Vacaville; Potrero Hills Landfill in Suisun City; Pacific Rim Recycling in Benicia; and Recology Vallejo.
Participants must register for the program before recycling their old mowers. Addresses and maps to the partner sites are available on the district’s mower exchange Web page. Once recycled mowers are processed, new no-emission mowers will be sent out to participants’ homes.
Two models available are on display. The WG787 17-inch, 24-volt mower ($259 after discount) is on display at the Yolo County Administration Building at 625 Court St. in Woodland. The WG788 19-inch, 36-volt mower ($329 after discount) is on display at the Solano County Government Center at 675 Texas St. in Fairfield.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and California Air Resources Board have committed funds to boost the number of mowers available under the program. Because of the Bay Area district’s commitment, all Solano County residents are eligible to participate.
