With the annual onslaught of candy canes and Christmas carols comes the family-oriented All District Jazz Extravaganza Concert.
This local tradition will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the Brunelle Performance Hall at Davis High, 315 W. 14th St.. The concert features all jazz band students from seventh to 12th grade.
“We see where they begin (as junior high musicians), and where they end up,” DHS Band Director Tom Slabaugh said.
Along with the jazz bands from Emerson, Holmes and Harper junior highs, the DHS Jazz Band will also perform various pieces ranging from contemporary to classical jazz. Slabaugh lists the commissioned piece by Eric Richards, “Firm Grasp of the Obvious,” as novel and worth seeing, as it utilizes all sections of the ensemble.
“It’s an exceptional piece, with different ideas changing rapidly,” Slabaugh said.
The concert will feature the vocal aspect of traditional jazz as well, as the DHS Jazz Choir will perform alongside the band.
As an opportunity to show off the variety of the Davis schools’ music program, concertgoers will be able to experience all sides of jazz.
“We’re going to be playing some phenomenal music, we’re really excited,” Slabaugh said.
For those interested, donations will be held at the door.
