American Legion hosts speech contest

The American Legion’s Yolo Post 77 will host its annual high school oratorical contest at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at 523 Bush St. in Woodland. The purpose of the American Legion’s national contest is to develop a better understanding and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States among high school students.

There is a series of five competitions, starting with the Post 77 contest in Woodland. Awards to winners at Post 77 are $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. Prize money is awarded to winners at each successive level. The first-place winner at the national level will receive an $18,000 scholarship.
