Writer Catriona McPherson will sign copies of her latest novel “Dandy Gilver and an Unsuitable Day for a Murder” at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St. in Davis.

The book is the sixth in a series featuring the aristocratic amateur sleuth Dandy Gilver, set in Scotland during the 1920s. In this new story, Gilver is caught between two feuding families who run rival department stores. Her services are needed when the heiress to one of the stores goes missing. Soon she is unraveling hidden family secrets, which leads her into danger and intrigue.

McPherson’s previous book, “Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains,” was picked by the Boston Globe as “one of the best crime novels of 2011.”

McPherson was born near Edinburgh and lived on a “ramshackle farm” in Scotland for many years; since 2010 she has lived on a farm in the Davis area. Her husband Neil is a professor at UC Davis.
