Author zeroes in on baby-making business
Miriam Zoll, author of the new memoir-exposé, “Cracked Open: Liberty, Fertility and the Pursuit of High-Tech Babies,” will discuss risks and bioethical concerns associated with fertility treatments, including high IVF failure rates, when she visits a Davis bookstore on Sunday.
She will speak at 4 p.m. at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St.
Zoll is the founding co-producer of the Ms. Foundation for Women’s original “Take Our Daughters To Work Day,” a current member of the board of Our Bodies Ourselves, and a 2005 MIT Research Fellow.
“For 35 years the $4 billion global reproductive technology industry has driven a tightly controlled and marketed narrative about fertility science that has been filtered predominantly through a media lens of ‘success’ and happy ending stories,” said Zoll, an international health and human rights advocate who has worked for the United Nations and the U.S. government.
“Globally, IVF cycles fail almost 80 percent of the time and in the United States in 2010, data from the Centers for Disease Control indicates an overall failure rate of 70 percent. Yet the vast majority of these outcomes, and the women and men affected by them, remain invisible in popular media.”
