Award honors young community leaders

The Davis Sunrise Rotary Club created a new community award in 2014 to honor of longtime community leader and club member Jay Gerber, who died in 2013.

Aimed at honoring younger contributors to the Davis community, this year’s inaugural recipient is Bill Habicht, associate pastor of the Davis Community Church, who was chosen for his commitment to social justice.

Among Habicht’s accomplishments in Davis are the creation of the Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter, the Youth Leadership Institute and Radiate Art. The club gave Habicht $1,000 toward the future Mosaic Tea and Coffee House, which the associate pastor is organizing.

The project will provide job training and a supportive community for adults with disabilities and serve as a place to enjoy art, music and theater in downtown Davis.

Habicht was publicly honored at a reception in April at the Odd Fellows Hall. The award will be given annually; watch for the nomination period next winter.
