Youths who want to learn baby-sitting skills are invited to sign up for an American Red Cross course being offered this fall.
Youths ages 11-15 will learn the skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or adult guardians. In addition, students will learn and practice Child & Infant CPR, rescue breathing, choking rescue, preventing disease transmission and first aid.
The course is fast-paced with hands-on activities, role-plays and lively discussions.
“You’ll learn to be the best baby-sitter on the block,” a news release said. “Plus, you’ll gain the confidence to make smart decisions and stay safe in any baby-sitting situation.”
Participants must be at least 11 years old by the last day of the course. Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will receive certifications in baby-sitter training and pediatric CPR and first aid (valid for two years).
Participants will learn how to supervise children and infants; perform basic child-care skills such as diapering and feeding; choose safe, age-appropriate games and toys; handle bedtime and discipline issues; identify safety hazards and prevent injuries; care for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts and bee stings; and find and interview for baby-sitting jobs.
The class is offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29, at the Community Pool building, 201 E. 14th St. in Davis. The cost is $150 and pre-registration is required.
