Yolo County Backpacks for Kids invites the public to help provide for local families by donating new backpacks and school supplies to children in need throughout Yolo County.
For the past five years, through the generosity of Yolo County residents, businesses and leaders, more than 4,000 children whose families had insufficient resources to buy school supplies have received the necessary materials to start the school year properly equipped and prepared to learn.
“Having a new backpack might not seem to be any big deal to the average person,” said Yolo County Supervisor Matt Rexroad, founder of the Backpacks for Kids program. “But to kids whose families are struggling to keep a roof over their heads or food on the table, a backpack and school supplies can make a huge impact by motivating them to attend school, work at their studies or just fit in with their classmates.
“As a community, we owe that to our kids. We must ensure that nothing inhibits their learning, and that they are properly prepared with the necessary school supplies to meet their educational needs.”
In partnership with the city of Woodland, Woodland Fire Department, Soroptimist International of Woodland, Friends of the Woodland Library, The Daily Democrat and Yolo County Children’s Alliance, Backpacks for Kids hopes to meet its annual goal of providing 1,000 supply-filled backpacks.
Community members can help by sending a tax-deductible donation to YCCA/Backpacks for Kids, P.O. Box 1645, Woodland, CA 95776. Donations of backpacks and supplies can be dropped off at Yolo County Supervisor district offices at 600 A St., Suite B in Davis; the Woodland Fire Department administrative office, 532 Court St. in Woodland; or the Woodland Public Library, 250 First St. in Woodland.
