A photo of a bee beard taken at the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility at UC Davis has won a gold award from the international Association for Communication Excellence. The association is composed of communicators, educators and information technologists in agriculture, natural resources and life and human sciences.

Communications specialist Kathy Keatley Garvey of the UCD department of entomology and nematology captured the image of Jakub Gabka of Poland, a visiting bee scientist, during an after-hours bee beard event conducted by bee breeder-geneticist Susan Cobey and research associate Elizabeth Frost.

Garvey, a Vacaville resident, also won a first-place gold award for “best writing on the web” for her Bug Squad Blog on “Thankful for Insects” (http://bit.ly/1s2nwd1) posted on the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources website, and a third-place bronze award for a series of her favorite photos from 2013 (http://bit.ly/KiiMj2).

Since 2008, Garvey has won a dozen gold awards from ACE for her writing and photography, plus the Outstanding Professional Skill Award for Writing in 2011 and the Outstanding Professional Skill Award for Photography in both 2012 and 2013.

The awards were presented at the organization’s annual meeting, held recently in Portland, Ore. Several other UC communicators received ACE awards at the Portland conference.
