Therese Schwenkler, blogger, author and creator of TheUnlost.com, will give a talk titled “Why The Heck Didn’t Anyone Tell Me This Stuff When I was in College?!” on Wednesday, May 16, at UC Davis.
The talk and question-and-answer session will begin at 7:10 p.m. in 119 Wellman Hall.
“When I was in college, most of the advice I got was useless crap,” Schwenkler said in a news release. “I didn’t know how to pick a major. I didn’t know how to pick a career, and I definitely had no clue where my life was headed after graduation.
“I knew there was more to life, but I wasn’t sure quite ‘what.’ I felt like I was wandering around on my own doing the best that I knew how, but underneath I felt totally lost.
“Six years later, I’ve learned a ton of stuff about work and about life — stuff that I wish someone would’ve told me before I graduated. Things like this:
* “Why it’s OK not to know exactly what you want to do after you graduate — and how to use this uncertainty to your advantage, blowing your peers out of the water in terms of both career and life awesomeness.
* “The most important thing you can do or achieve in college and in life (hint: it’s not your grades, your profession, or your reputation). Oh, and it’s not partying, either, although sometimes that’s fun, too.
* “The best way to find an awesome, interesting and fulfilling job straight out of school (if that’s what you want to do).
* “Why you don’t have to live up to other people’s expectations to be happy (and why I quit my cushy corporate accounting job to travel the country and live more simply and passionately).”
