Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion.
Blood Collectors Week, Sept. 9-15, promotes and recognizes the contributions of phlebotomists, apheresis operators and all others involved in supporting the nation’s blood supply. A total of 17 million units of blood were needed in the United States last year, according to a news release from BloodSource, Sacramento’s blood center.
“BloodSource celebrates the accomplishments of this profession as vital to the mission of saving lives in our community,” the release added.
More than 200 BloodSource employees help ensure that blood components like red cells, platelets and plasma are readily available to help patients at more than 40 hospitals in Northern and Central California. The nearest BloodSource donor center is at 1801 Hanover Drive, Suite A, in Davis.
