Botanist decodes the kitchen

By From page A4 | July 10, 2014

Are tomatoes a fruit, vegetable, botanical berry or a culinary vegetable?

Are avocados, bell peppers, eggplants, squash, sweet peppers, tomatillos, vanilla and zucchini fruits or vegetables?

Local residents can find out the answers to these questions while learning to identity the structure and classification of common supermarket fruits and vegetables at “Kitchen Botany,” a hands-on presentation at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis.

Ellen Dean, curator of the UC Davis Center for Plant Diversity, will give the presentation from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 16.

No reservations are required for the free program, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Davis Library.
