Briefly: Learn more about Haiti’s recovery

By
March 29, 2011 |

Pierre Labossiere and Sister Maureen Duignan, representing the San Francisco Bay Area Haiti Emergency Relief Fund, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday on recent grassroots recovery activities in Haiti. They will be at the Winters Public Library, 708 Railroad Ave. in Winters.

Labossiere just last week returned from Haiti, where he learned first-hand of the status of the recovery and observed the return of formerly elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Port-au-Prince.

Sister Maureen and Labossiere will talk about their involvement in providing direct support to Haitian people who are still struggling to recover from last year’s earthquake and cholera epidemic. Their efforts were supported by local residents who attended a fundraiser last spring at the Palms Playhouse, which collected more than $3,000.

Details on HERF’s activities over the past year and plans for the future will be discussed during the short presentations. For more information, call (530) 795-5555.

Pop-rock singer Wolfe visits Davis

Los Angeles troubador Henry Wolfe, former frontman of the New York City indie band Bravo Silva, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Sophia’s Thai Bar & Kitchen, 129 E St. in downtown Davis. A $5 cover will be charged.

Wolfe’s new album, “Linda Vista,” which will be released Tuesday, was produced by Nico Aglietti and Aaron Older of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, and features pop rock songs infused with hints of the chilled-out L.A. music scene. Wolfe’s music is in the vein of Paul Simon and Harry Nilsson, his publicist says.

Wolfe is No. 3 on the Los Angeles Times’ list of Artists to Watch in 2011.

Volunteers needed for film festival

Volunteers are still needed for the eighth annual Davis Film Festival, taking place Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, at the Veterans’ Memorial Theatre, 203 E. 14th St. in Davis. Volunteers will take tickets at the door, sell concessions and help with cleanup.

A volunteer projectionist is also needed at the Davis Film Festival preview party, a free community event, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. this Saturday at the International House, 10 College Park. All volunteers receive free passes to the festival at the Vets’ Memorial.

Film festival tickets are $10 general and $7.50 for students and are available online at http://www.davisfilmfest.org or at Armadillo Music, 205 F St. in downtown Davis. Tickets also will be available at the door.

For more information, call (530) 759-9448 or email [email protected]

Aging seminar set at Woodland church

Woodland Presbyterian Church will present a healthy aging seminar from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at 1324 Columbia Drive.

Speakers will be Lenise Curtis, M.S., from Geriatric Home Care Specialists; Sharon Blaha from Yolo Hospice; Peggy Phelps, certified caregiver resource from the Yolo Adult Day Health Care Center and Woodland Healthcare; and Dr. Vijay Khatri from the UC Davis Medical Center. Refreshments will be served.

The Rev. Kathy McIntosh-Smith of Woodland Presbyterian Church reflected that “we all want those we love to live as long and as well as possible. We want to know how we can improve our care for or family members, neighbors and eventually ourselves, but it’s a subject we hate to talk about.

“Often, we end up making decisions in a crisis, without a full range of information about options available. Hopefully, this little seminar will give us some facts and ideas, and get the conversation moving.”

Grace House sets volunteer training

Training for new Grace House ministers of hospitality — otherwise known as volunteers — will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, April 11, at 441 D St. in downtown Davis.

Grace in Action is a faith-based community ministry serving the homeless by equipping the church to provide compassionate care, spiritual companionship, rest and respite, and referrals to local agencies.

The ministry serves as a link between those struggling with homelessness and agency shelter programs, serving the most vulnerable in Yolo County by bridging the gap between the community of giving and local agency programs.

Grace House is open on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. RSVP to Cindy Burger (530) 792-1053.

City offers summer band camp

Applications for the city of Davis’ Rock Band Camp are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 15. Rock Band Camp is offered in partnership with Rock Band University, and is taught by two experienced musicians.

Rock Band Camp is for anyone ages 10 to 17 and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from June 27 to Aug. 12. Campers are placed in a “band” of other musicians and spend the week learning and practicing songs to prepare for a show in downtown Davis on Friday afternoons.

The application helps the instructors put campers together in a group based on instrument, age, experience, preferred type of music and availability. All ability levels are encouraged to apply.

Applications can be found at http://www.davisteenscene.org and may be dropped off or mailed to the Community Services Department at City Hall, 23 Russell Blvd., or faxed to Christine Foster at (530) 758-0204.

For more information, call (530) 757-5626 or visit http://www.davisteenscene.org.
