“Challenges and Opportunities for Public Research Universities in Brazil” is the title of a talk to be given Wednesday, April 17, at UC Davis as part of the Provost’s Forums on the Public University and the Social Good.

Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, scientific director and professor at the Sao Paulo Research Foundation and State University of Campinas (Unicamp), will be the speaker. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and has been Unicamp’s director of the Physics Institute, dean of research from 1994 to 1998 and rector from 2002 to 2005.

At the Sao Paulo Research Foundation, one of the main research funding agencies in Brazil, he oversees the rigorous peer review of 18,000 research proposals in all fields every year. He has organized broad research programs in bioenergy and global climate change, fostering collaboration and co-funding with industry and international agencies.

His talk will run from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the Student Community Center on the UCD campus.

The Provost’s Series is sponsored by the office of the provost and executive vice chancellor, the Community and Regional Development Program and the Center for Regional Change. The event is free and open to the public.
