Discussion of oil by rail EIR planned Sunday

By From page A5 | July 27, 2014

Another in a series of local workshops to discuss proposals to move crude oil through Davis by rail will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Blanchard Room at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis.

The possibility of 100 train cars carrying crude oil from Bakken oil fields in North Dakota and tar sands from Canada to Valero’s oil refinery in Benicia will be the topic of discussion.

Local activists have been critical of the city of Benicia’s draft environmental impact report, saying it fails to address the impacts and risks to communities along the train route through the Feather River Canyon, Roseville, Sacramento, Davis and Dixon, among other cities.

Organizers are encouraging local residents to write letters to the city of Benicia to voice their concerns and to identify issues to be explored in the EIR. A YouTube workshop on the EIR, presented by Benicians for a Safe and Healthy Community, will be shown.
