Festival showcases heirloom tomato

Farm Fresh To You invites community members to the sixth annual Capay Tomato Festival at its Capay Organic farm.

The festival runs from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 13, with a full slate of activities for all ages, including heirloom and cherry tomato tastings, farm tours and live music throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Attendees are invited to camp overnight in the farm orchards. Event proceeds benefit the Kathleen Barsotti Nonprofit for Sustainable Agriculture.

The nonprofit gives an annual scholarship to a high school senior who plans to pursue a career related to sustainable agriculture. KBNP also donates school supplies to farm worker families in the Capay Valley. Last year, it distributed 443 backpacks full of school supplies to area students.

Visitors may taste approximately 10 heirloom tomato varieties. The 2012 heirloom tomato tasting winner was Brandywine, with the Sungold variety taking the cherry tomato category.

In addition to tasting all of the farm’s tomato varieties, visitors may purchase tacos, pizzas and sandwiches from local purveyors, or bring their own picnic dinner.

Live music will be provided by Snap Jackson & the Knock on Wood Players (4 p.m.), Miss Lonely Hearts (6:30 p.m.) and Old Man Markley (9 p.m.).

Tickets are $25 per person, available at the door. The farm is at 23800 State Highway 16 in Capay.
