By From page A9 | October 02, 2012

A short version of the film “To Kill or to Cure” will be shown from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Blanchard Room at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis.

“To Kill or To Cure” looks at complex issues of crime and motives of punishment by examining prison life in China, Japan, Canada, the United States and Finland. A discussion will follow, focusing on Propositions 34 and 36 on the Nov. 6 ballot.

How do societies deal with those who commit crimes and yet protect individual rights? Whose interests are served? What methods are actually effective? Is society really safe? And at what costs?
