Akiva Tor, Israel’s consul general for the Pacific Northwest, will present an update on Israel and the Middle East at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Congregation Bet Haverim, 1715 Anderson Road in Davis.
As part of the congregation’s annual weeklong celebration of the 63rd anniversary of the formation of the state of Israel, the program will take place in the CBH Social Hall. It is co-sponsored by the CBH Israel Matters Committee and Israel Peace Alternatives Discussion Group.
A veteran of the Israeli diplomatic corps, Tor has been this region’s consul general since 2008. Previously, he was world Jewish affairs adviser to the president of Israel, director of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, deputy director for Palestinian affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and press and information attaché at the embassy in the Hague.
He served in the Israel Defense Forces as a paratrooper.
Tor is a native of the United States, growing up in Cleveland, who immigrated to Israel upon graduation from Columbia University. Later he studied at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, specializing in Jewish values in Israel’s foreign policy.
The annual Israel Independence Celebration Barbecue will conclude the week’s activities, at noon Sunday, May 15. It is free and open to the public.
