Learn how to manage squirrels
All are welcome to attend a presentation and discussion Tuesday evening with Josh Bush, California Fish & Game representative, and John McNerney, wildlife specialist for the city of Davis, to learn more about the biology of native and introduced squirrels, what issues are associated with increased squirrel populations and possible management options.
The presentation and discussion will begin at 7 p.m. at the Village Homes Community Center, 2661 Portage Bay Ave. East.
One aspect of squirrel biology is their territorial behavior, which implies that if a program is implemented to eliminate them in a particular area, others may move in to claim the territory, a news release said. This indicates that coordinated management efforts would be most effective. Benefits and challenges of a neighborhoodwide or communitywide management plan will be discussed.
Management options to be discussed — exploring the pros and cons — include reducing habitat (food, water and cover), tightening up homes, protecting vehicles, trapping and poisons. In addition, UC Davis’ experience with sterilization efforts will be discussed.
