Members of MEChA at UC Davis will join hundreds of other members across California for campus rallies Saturday. Movimento Estudantil Chicana/o de Aztlan was created in the 1960s to empower young Chicana/o students; the movement successfully created and institutionalized Chicana/o studies on many college campuses.

“Sadly, our spaces are still under attack and so is our presence in institutions of higher education,” a news release said. “During our march on (Saturday) we will continue to fight the suppression of our community’s education and take a strong stance against the unfair ban on ethnic studies in Tucson, Ariz., and the lack of opportunities presented by the undocumented community.”

The Davis group will gather at 4:45 p.m. in Educational Science Lecture Hall 123 and march around the perimeter of the campus from 5:15 to 6 p.m. The demonstration will conclude with a rally at 6 p.m. on the Memorial Union Patio.
